Maintaining gas appliances is one of the most overlooked things in a home. Most people do not even give them a second thought until something goes wrong. This is of course the wrong way to operate because an appliance needs to be taken care of if you plan to have it around for a while. This is really no different than owning a car. If you take care of the car then it will be there for you when you need it. The same holds true for gas appliances.

First and foremost you must keep the appliance clean. This is true of ranges, water heaters, furnaces and anything else that you run with gas as the power source. This includes the burners on a range, the coils and blower on the furnace and the lime scale on the water heater. You want to keep the area where the flame will burn free of debris and dirt.
